This makes me think of Maslow's famous hierarchy of needs, in which certain higher order needs such as self-actualization cannot be met until lower order needs are met, like food and shelter. In being a spiritual and physical being we have a similar hierarchy: one problem can be had in staying stuck at the bottom and not progressing to higher order purposes, while another can be had in trying to jump from one level to the next without going through the requisite steps.
