Aurelius - Meditations 4:3c

Well, then, shall mere glory distract you? Look at the swiftness of the oblivion of all men; the gulf of endless time, behind and before; the hollowness of applause, the fickleness and folly of those who seem to speak well of you, and the narrow room in which it is confined. This should make you pause. For the entire earth is a point in space, and how small a corner thereof is this your dwelling place, and how few and how paltry those who will sing your praises here![1]

[1] Long’s Translation: “and what kind of people are they who will praise thee.”

Excerpt from Carl Sagan's "A Pale Blue Dot"

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

Yirmiyahu 9:22-23

Thus said Hashem: “Let not the wise man glorify himself with his wisdom, let not the strong man glorify himself with his strength, let not the wealthy man glorify himself with his wealth. Only in this may one who glorifies himself take glory: knowing and comprehending Me, that I am Hashem Who does kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these is My desire” – the word of Hashem.
